전쟁의 본질에 대한 고전적 이론과 현대적 이론을 논의한다. 전쟁의 원인과 고대의 평면전쟁에서 현대의 4세대 전쟁에 이르는 각종 전쟁형태에 대한 탐구를 한다. 전쟁의 각 단계 준비단계, 이행단계, 종결단계에서 현상분석과 평화적 예방책, 해결책을 논의한다

국제간의 정치, 경제, 문화 군사 등의 충돌에 의한 분쟁을 논의한다. 국제시스템의 변화에 따른 분쟁의 여러가지 원인과 형태를 분석한다. 내전, 지역분쟁, 영토 분쟁, 테러지즘과 같은 분쟁에 대하여 현상을 설명하고 예방과 해결방안을 논의한다.

주요 전쟁에 대한 역사를 연구하여 전쟁의 원인과 결과를 분석한다. 고대전쟁으로부터 현대전쟁에 이르는 역사적 사실과 의미를 논의한다. 역사 연구방법에 의한 전쟁사 연구를 통하여 전쟁 문헌사료의 발굴과 조사, 재해석 등을 논하고 현대사적 의미를 탐구한다.

국방정책에 대한 정책분석이론의 적용을 논한다. 국방정책에 있어서 문제의 식별과 정의를 위한 방법, 정책대안의 탐색 개발 절차, 정책대안의 평가, 그리고 정책 우선순위 설정과 해결전략 선택의 접근방법 등을 논의한다. 현재 국방정책에서의 사례연구를 병행한다.

평화유지를 위한 군비통제의 역할과 그 이론에 대하여 논의한다. 전후 냉전체제 이후의 군비통제의 역사를 통하여 군비통제의 방법과 한계점을 논의한다. 세계 군비통제의 현황과 문제, 동북아의 군비 통제의 현안과 향후 대안에 대하여도 논의한다.
